Emiliano Zapata

Emiliano Zapata (1883-1919), a peasant of almost pure Indian stock,
was a leader of the Mexican agrarian Revolution from 1910 to 1918. Zapata
and Pancho Villa together led their fellow Indian peasants of Morelos
to overthrow of the fascist government of Porfirio Diaz. Later he opposed
presidents Madero, Huerta, and Carranza for failing to carry out land
reforms. He was assassinated by army officers supporting Carranza. The
1952 movie Viva Zapata, directed by Elia Kazan starred Marlon Brando and
Anthony Quinn, who won an Academy award for his role as Zapata's brother.
The screenplay was written by, get this... John Steinbeck.
Furthermore the modern-day Zapatista movement in Mexico is named in honor
of Emiliano Zapata.
