The artwork on this T-shirt, a triptych entitled "Stack of
Dalai Lamas"
is by one of Seattle's finest artists, Faye Jones.
The Tibetans believe that the Dalai Lama is reincarnated
in a male child between 49 days and 2 years after the Dalai Lama's
death. Once the new leader is chosen, he is rigorously trained
and takes office on his 18th birthday. The title means "Ocean"
The 14th Dalai Lama was born Tenzin Gyatso and was
identified by Buddhist monks at the age of 2 as the 14th incarnation
of Chenrezig, the Lord of Compassion. He was forced to flee Tibet
in 1959 when the Chinese brutally took over. Since that time the
Dalai Lama has lived at Dharamsala in India and has remained both
the spiritual and secular leader ofthe Tibetan people. He was
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his refusal to endorse
a violent solution to the Chinese occupation of Tibet and his
tireless support of nonviolence throughout the world.
